Bergen op Zoom cold storage warehouse gives accurate temperature control and faster delivery times

Client profile
Dawn Foods is an international bakery manufacturer and distributor with more than 1,500 customers across Europe and 20 manufacturing plants worldwide. Its European operation is based in Steenbergen in Holland and Evesham in the UK.

The company delivers high quality European pastry ingredients, original American bakery products and frozen finished American specialities to retailers, bakers and food service channels.

Dawn Foods selected Partner Logistics’ cold storage warehouse in Bergen op Zoom in 2004 to manage their storage of stock which is distributed to the mainland European market.

Logistics solution
Dawn Foods require an efficient frozen storage solution that provides high performance and quality, with the capability of speed and throughput to meet customer demands, and one that is better able to store and support the distribution of a wide range of bakery products which are distributed to customers across Europe.

Partner Logistics were able to offer the service and storage facilities required at their Bergen op Zoom site, Partner Logistics largest cold store in The Netherlands, which is located less than thirty minutes from Dawn Food’s production facility in Steenbergen.

Between 2004 and 2009 Dawn Foods stored only full pallets at Partner Logistics Bergen op Zoom. However, in 2009, the site was able to provide order picking services which allowed Dawn Foods to centralise all of their stock at Bergen op Zoom. The frequency of transport companies in and out of Bergen op Zoom was also an improvement from their previous arrangement, so they were able to offer their customers faster delivery times.

Partner Logistics also provide a transport service between the Dawn Foods factory in Steenbergen and the cold storage warehouse, providing an integrated storage solution.

Business benefits delivered
The use of one centralised location for all of Dawn Food’s products has improved efficiency throughout the whole supply chain process and has also contributed towards helping them to meet their sustainability targets.

Partner Logistics have invested heavily in the latest automation to ensure that they improve efficiency within the supply chain. This use of the latest technology also reduces costs and improves productivity, whilst not impacting quality of service. The sophisticated warehouse management systems ensure the flow of goods is optimised at all times and delivers industry-leading accuracy for order picking and load performance. Dawn Foods deliver 700 pallets to the Bergen op Zoom facility each week, so it is crucial that the warehouse is efficient and responsive to provide the high quality end-to-end solution required.

In addition, due to the logistically optimised location of the Bergen op Zoom warehouse in relation to the Dawn Foods manufacturing facility in Steenbergen, it has been possible to significantly reduce their food miles and accompanying CO2 emissions. Furthermore, through keeping their stock in a centralised location, Dawn Foods have been able to improve their customers lead times which is a significant benefit in an industry that increasingly requires a day-1-for-day-2 service.

Speaking of Dawn Foods relationship with Partner Logistics, Helco Sala, Director Supply Chain Europe at Dawn Foods, said: “We have been working with Partner Logistics for more than 10 years and they have always been able to deliver a solution that meets all of our requirements, adding significant value to our overall operations, whilst providing excellent levels of service. We have been able to consolidate our stock together to create a faster, more reliable supply chain and in turn reduced our overall costs and CO2 emissions.”

Partner Logistics provides highly-automated and sustainable warehouse solutions to meet all of their customers’ needs. As well as operating six warehouses across Benelux and the UK, Partner Logistics works with transport partners to provide a completely integrated logistics solution.
