Active in 80 countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Lamb Weston deliver more than 655,000 tonnes of frozen potato products each year from five state-of-the-art plants across Europe. The company offers a product range that’s based on consumer insights and is renowned for its consistent quality, innovation and service.

The company, which has its corporate office in Kruiningen, Netherlands, employs over 1,300 people in Europe and offers a large choice of high quality potato products.

Lamb Weston / Meijer were the founding customers of Partner Logistics’ cold store warehouses in Bergen op Zoom, Netherlands and Wisbech, UK and are the largest company working with Partner Logistics group-wide.

Logistics solution
Lamb Weston / Meijer required a storage solution which is highly efficient, reliable and flexible to store and support the distribution of a wide range of their products distributed to major customers across Europe.

The company selected Partner Logistics in 2002 to design, build and operate a deep freeze warehouse for the storage of their frozen products in Bergen Op Zoom, The Netherlands. Lamb Weston remains the biggest company to use the Bergen op Zoom site, making use of 75% of the site’s storage capacity.

Supporting Lamb Weston’s international expansion into the UK, Partner Logistics subsequently designed and built a new super-size cold store in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, located just 1km from the Lamb Weston processing facility. Operational since 2011, the facility is the UK’s largest frozen food warehouse with a capacity of 77,000 pallets.

Both state-of-the-art warehouses operate at temperatures of -24°C, and are fully automated and designed to the highest environmental specifications.

Business benefits delivered
In the past Lamb Weston / Meijer had to use over 40 locations to store their products. Through their partnership with Partner Logistics they have been able to reduce this down to just two centralised storage locations. This has significantly improved efficiency and flexibility within the supply chain and has also contributed significantly towards a reduction in the company’s carbon emissions, supporting their strong commitment to energy efficiency.

The Partner Logistics cold stores were designed and built to the highest environmental specifications and, because of this, offer a carbon footprint that is considered to be the lowest in the industry. Furthermore, due to the logistically optimised location of the warehouses in relation to the Lamb Weston factories, this significantly reduces their food miles and in turn, their CO2 emissions.

Partner Logistics further supports the efficient supply chain solution by providing a shuttle service transporting products from the Lamb Weston factories to the Partner Logistics cold stores in both Bergen Op Zoom and Wisbech.

Partner Logistics has invested heavily in the latest technology and automation resulting in reduced costs and significantly more efficient warehouse processes, whilst also improving the overall quality of service.

Additionally, the latest technology  used at all Partner Logistics sites includes sophisticated inventory software which ensures the flow of goods is optimised at all times and delivers industry-best accuracy for order picking, load performance and other critical metrics. Lamb Weston delivers 2,300 pallets to the Wisbech facility and 16,000 pallets to Bergen Op Zoom each week so it is essential that the warehouse is able to provide the high quality end-to-end solution that Lamb Weston requires.

Speaking of Lamb Weston’s relationship with Partner Logistics, Gijs van Hoogstraten, Corporate Manager Logistics, Lamb Weston / Meijer, said: “Since we first began working with Partner Logistics they have been able to provide a tailor-made service to meet and even exceed our needs. We were fully involved during the planning and design phases of both sites and they have added significant value to our overall operations, whilst providing excellent levels of service.”

Partner Logistics is unique in the frozen warehousing industry as its fully automated warehouses are built to specific client requirements and are delivered through sustainable, long-term contracts. As well as operating deep freeze warehouses, Partner Logistics works closely with transport partners to provide an integrated end-to-end logistics solution.
